India is very rich in terms of its diversity in many aspects. Food is no exception from this. This tour focuses on subjects and importance related to food and its sovereignty, thus it enables to discover how local people can be self sufficient in terms of food. This tour also enhances the need for the protection of ecology, biodiversity and traditional knowledge of food production, agriculture, nutritional values and food processing. During the tour you will also have the possibility to taste and learn to local specialties.
Day 1, 2 & 3 & 4: Wayanad
During day one a taxi will pick up you from Calicut Airport/ railways station to Thrikkaipetta, Wayanad. Thrikkaipetta is a traditional and agricultural village, surrounded by rice fields, spice gardens, tea plantations and flanked by the Westen Ghaats. Village Walk, hiking, traditional lunch, visit of garden, craft centre visit, farmer and site seeing are the principal activities. Most of the activities are orientated towards food you will be able to exchange with locals, discover their lands and taste their food.
Day 5, 6 & 7 & 8 :Nilgiri Ecoscape &Kolappalli
Ecoscape is a small guest house surrounded by forest and managed by indigenous communities of Nilgiris. Plantation walk, swim, trekking are activities that can be done here. Furthermore you will have the possibility to discuss with the Ecoscape team, about land right issues and man and animal conflict. In Kolappalli you will be able to do a tea tour with visiting tea estate, learn tea history, tea processing, and tea tasting.
Day 9: Calicut
This beautiful ancestral coastal town is well known for its spice and other trade with Arabs and Europeans. You will be able to walk among crowed and friendly streets and interact with the local population. You will also have the possibility to discuss with expert on food sovereignty about agricultural situation in Kerala. You will be taken to various eating places and get a wonderful opportunity to try diverse food items here.
Day 10 & 11: Arattupuzha
You will spend the day in Arattupuzha, and have the opportunity to discover the Snehatheeram community. This is a group of women trying to live with traditional ecology and livelihood systems.
Travelers can learn the importance of fisheries in food security. You can choose to sleep with the Snehatheeram community cottage or in a Homestay provided by Kabani. Activities proposed by Snehatheeram are cooking, boat cruise, fishing expeditions, local crafts and meeting of villagers.
Day 12 & 13 &14 :Thannermukkom
During your stay in Thannermukkom you will have the possibility to travel in a country boat and benefit from the peacefulness of the backwaters. Village walk and visit of local workers such as fisherman, farmers are also on the program. You will be able to complete your knowledge about food, food sovereignty and the importance of its diversity with interacting with organic farmers and others.
Day 15 : Kochi
On the last day will be drop to the Kochi airport after having breakfast in a home stay.
